Gallipoli

Puglia, Italy

Why visit Gallipoli?

Gallipoli — not to be confused with the Gallipoli peninsula in Turkey — is a town on the Ionian coast of Puglia's Salento peninsula, in the province of Lecce. It is divided into two parts: a modern mainland district, and the old town, a compact maze of whitewashed baroque buildings packed onto a small limestone island connected to the mainland by a bridge originally built in the 16th–17th century. The old town is ringed by sea walls and centres on the 17th-century Baroque Cattedrale di Sant'Agata and the 13th-century Angevin-Aragonese Castle, which began under Byzantine rule and was later remodelled with the polygonal, round-towered fortifications of the Angevin and Aragonese periods.
