Visso

Marche, Italy

Why visit Visso?

Visso is a mountain town in the province of Macerata, sitting within the Monti Sibillini National Park near the border with Umbria; the park's administrative seat has been based in the town since 1993. Its historic center preserves medieval walls, towers, and houses alongside Renaissance-era noble palaces with carved stone portals bearing family crests and Latin mottos. The heart of the old town is Piazza dei Martiri Vissani, bordered by 15th- and 16th-century buildings. For centuries the local economy centered on sheep-rearing. Visso was the epicenter of a series of earthquakes in October 2016 that caused significant damage to the historic center, and the town still bears visible marks of that damage, though it remains regarded as one of Italy's notable historic villages.
