Busseto

Emilia-Romagna, Italy

Why visit Busseto?

Busseto is a small town in the Bassa Parmense, the flat farmland north of Parma, famous as the hometown of composer Giuseppe Verdi. Verdi was born in 1813 in the nearby hamlet of Roncole di Busseto, where his birth house is now a multimedia museum. Villa Verdi, the country estate the composer built in 1848 in the village of Sant'Agata just north of town, is where he lived for most of his life and composed operas including Rigoletto, Aida, and Falstaff; several of its rooms, including his study and library, are preserved as he left them. In the town itself, the Teatro Giuseppe Verdi, inaugurated in 1868, honors the composer, who took his first musical steps directing the local Philharmonic.
