Roccaraso

Abruzzo, Italy

Why visit Roccaraso?

Roccaraso is a town in the Alto Sangro area of Abruzzo, in L'Aquila province, and Italy's largest Apennine ski destination. The settlement's roots trace back to around 975 AD, when it is thought to have been known as Rocca Rasini after the nearby Rasinus stream. For centuries the surrounding mountains — Monte Aremogna and Monte Pratello chief among them — supported transhumance, the seasonal movement of shepherds and flocks between high summer pastures and coastal plains; that pastoral heritage is still visible in the trail network that today forms the area's ski runs and hiking routes.

Tourism arrived with the late-19th-century opening of the rail link to Naples, which brought the area's first visitors. Skiing has an especially long history here: the first international ski race in these mountains was held in Roccaraso in 1910, and the first ski lift, the "Slittovia" at Monte Zurrone, was built in 1936; the resort marked its centenary in 2010. Today the Alto Sangro ski area combines three linked zones — Aremogna, Pizzalto, and Monte Pratello — connected by lifts and ski-bus routes, together offering around 110 km of slopes, the largest network in the Apennines.

How do you get there?

Roccaraso is reached by road in L'Aquila province; the town's tourism began with a rail link to Naples in the late 19th century.

The three ski zones — Aremogna, Pizzalto, and Monte Pratello — are linked by ski-bus routes during the winter season.

What are the things to do?

The slopes and ridgelines of Monte Aremogna and Monte Pratello are the town's defining landscape, shaped by a long history of transhumance pastoralism now overlaid with ski infrastructure.

Skiing and snowboarding across the linked Aremogna, Pizzalto, and Monte Pratello zones (roughly 110 km of piste, the largest ski area in the Apennines) is the principal activity; the same trail network is used for hiking outside the winter season.
