Lanciano

Abruzzo, Italy

Why visit Lanciano?

Lanciano is a medium-sized town of ancient Roman origin in the province of Chieti, Abruzzo, on the Adriatic side of central Italy. It is best known internationally as the site of the Eucharistic Miracle of Lanciano, a Catholic-recognized event traditionally dated to 730–750 CE, when a Basilian monk who doubted the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist is said to have witnessed the consecrated bread and wine turn to flesh and blood during Mass. Scientific analysis of the preserved relics found the "flesh" to be genuine striated cardiac muscle tissue and the "blood" to be real blood; the Church officially recognizes the miracle as authentic, and the relics remain a significant pilgrimage draw.

How do you get there?

Lanciano does not have a direct train connection from Rome or Milan; travelers generally change trains in Pescara, from which the journey takes roughly an hour, versus about 3–4 hours from Roma Termini with transfers. Taxis or local buses run from the station to the town center and the sanctuary.

The historic center is walkable; the sanctuary is on Corso Roma, a short walk from the main piazza and nearby public parking.

What are the things to do?

  • Basilica di San Francesco (Church of the Eucharistic Miracle): built in 1258 in Romanesque-Burgundian style near Plebiscito Square, it stands over the remains of the original 7th-century church where the miracle is said to have occurred; guided tours run twice daily to the underground remains.
  • Chapel of the Miracle: preserves the stone said to bear the miraculous bloodstain.

Visit the Basilica di San Francesco and take the guided tour of the underground original church.
