Mahan
Kermān, Iran
Why visit Mahan?
Mahan is a small historic town 35 km south-east of Kerman, best known for two of Iran's most celebrated attractions: the Shah Nematollah Vali Shrine and the Unesco-listed Shazdeh Garden. Mahan sits at the foot of the Jebal Barez mountains on the edge of the Lut Desert. It has a temperate climate and serves as the most popular day trip from Kerman.

By Bus

By Car
Mahan is a 35-minute drive from Kerman on a good paved road heading south. The route passes through a scenic mountain pass before descending into the Mahan valley.
By Taxi

Mahan is walkable. The shrine and the garden are about 2 km apart — a pleasant 20-minute walk or a short taxi ride.
What are the things to do?
Shah Nematollah Vali Shrine: The spectacular turquoise-domed mausoleum of the 14th–15th-century Sufi poet and mystic. The complex features exquisite mirror-work, tilework, carved wooden doors, and tranquil gardens. Non-Muslims are welcome in most areas.
Shazdeh Garden (Prince's Garden): A Unesco World Heritage Persian garden built in the Qajar era. A long stone-lined water channel descends through terraced cypress and pomegranate trees toward a two-storey pavilion at the top.
Mahan Old Bazaar: A tiny but charming market street near the shrine.
Spend time in the Shazdeh Garden at different times of day — the light on the mountains in the late afternoon is superb.
Attend a Sufi commemoration or poetry reading at the Shah Nematollah Vali Shrine (check locally).
Walk the lane between the shrine and the garden, passing old plane trees and village houses.
