Astara

Astara (آستارا) is a border city in northwestern Gīlān Province, at the frontier with Azerbaijan. Situated on the Caspian Sea coast, it is a key commercial crossing point. The city has a humid subtropical climate with abundant rainfall.

The population is a mix of ethnic Talysh, Azeris, and Persians, giving the city a distinctive cultural character. Astara is also a transit hub for travellers moving between Iran and Azerbaijan.

By Plane

Rasht Airport (RAS) is about 170 km southeast. Lankaran Airport (LLK) in Azerbaijan is 40 km north.

By Car / Road

Astara is at the northern end of the Rasht–Astara highway (Route 22). Buses run from Rasht and Tehran.

The town is compact. Taxis are available for the border crossing and nearby areas.
