Why visit Sarein?

Sarein (سرعین) is a spa resort town positioned at an altitude of 1,650 metres on the eastern slopes of Mount Sabalan in Ardabil Province, northwestern Iran. The town's name originates from the Arabic word for "springhead," referring to the thermal waters heated by volcanic activity inside dormant Mount Sabalan (4,811 m).

Travelers visit Sarein primarily for its concentration of natural mineral hot springs, which feed both historic open-air pools and multi-story thermal complexes. The waters contain high levels of sulfur, calcium, and magnesium, traditionally sought for relieving joint stiffness, rheumatism, and muscular pain. Beyond the baths, the town serves as a center for mountain beekeeping and dairy production, renowned across Iran for wild herb honey and clotted cream breakfasts.

The mountain elevation gives Sarein a dry alpine climate. Summer temperatures remain significantly lower than in central Iranian cities, while winters bring heavy snowfall, freezing conditions, and winter sports on the higher volcanic ridges.
