Meshgin Shahr

Meshgin Shahr (مشگینشهر), formerly known as Khiyav, is a city on the slopes of Mount Sabalan in northwestern Ardabil Province. Archaeological finds in the area point to settlement going back millennia, and an inscription attributed to the Sassanid king Shapur II near the old castle traces the town's history to the Sassanid period. Historical coin finds link the region to the later Atabaks of Azerbaijan, and the 14th-century historian Hamdallah Mustawfi listed the town (as Khiyav) among the district's principal towns. Fortresses in and around the city date from periods spanning the Sassanid through the Safavid eras.

Because of its position on Sabalan's slopes, the area is rich in natural hot springs fed by the mountain's volcanic geology — known springs include Qaynarja, Shabil, Qotursu, and Moil, ranging roughly 30–80°C and mineral-rich (sulfur, calcium, sodium), traditionally used for skin conditions, rheumatism, and joint pain.
