Merauke
Papua, Indonesia
Why visit Merauke?
Merauke is the administrative capital of South Papua province, located in the southeastern corner of Indonesian New Guinea along the mouth of the Maro River on the Arafura Sea. Established by Dutch colonial authorities in February 1902 as a military and administrative outpost to stop headhunting raids across the border into British New Guinea, the town has developed into the primary commercial, logistical, and transport hub of southern Papua. It famously anchors the eastern terminus of Indonesian national territory, commemorated in the national anthem "Dari Sabang Sampai Merauke".
Unlike the dense mountainous rainforests of northern and central Papua, the landscape around Merauke belongs to the Trans-Fly savanna and grasslands ecoregion. The terrain is flat and dominated by open eucalyptus woodlands, monsoon savannas, and seasonal freshwater wetlands resembling northern Australia. This environment supports large populations of agile wallabies (Macropus agilis), giant musamus termite mounds rising several meters high, and over 350 species of resident and migratory birds protected within Wasur National Park.
The climate is tropical wet-and-dry (Köppen Aw), driven by alternating monsoonal winds from Australia and Asia. The dry season runs from May through October, bringing lower humidity, clear skies, and daytime temperatures ranging from 28°C to 31°C (82°F–88°F). The wet season extends from November through April, when heavy monsoon rains flood the low-lying savannas and raise humidity, with daytime highs around 30°C to 33°C (86°F–91°F).
