Gili Islands
Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia
Why visit Gili Islands?
The Gili Islands comprise three small coral islands—Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air—situated in the Lombok Strait off the northwest coast of Lombok, Indonesia. Administratively part of the North Lombok Regency in West Nusa Tenggara, each island maintains a distinct identity. Gili Trawangan (often called Gili T) is the largest and most developed, known for its nightlife and diving hubs. Gili Meno is the central, least populated island, geared toward quiet beach stays and honeymooners. Gili Air sits closest to Lombok and balances a local village setting with beachfront cafés, dive centers, and yoga retreats.
All three islands enforce a strict prohibition on motorized vehicles. Travel across the sandy pathways occurs entirely by bicycle, on foot, or in horse-drawn carts known as cidomo. The surrounding waters form the Gili Matra Marine Protected Area, sheltering shallow coral reefs, resident green and hawksbill sea turtles, and rich reef fish populations.
The islands experience a tropical climate that is noticeably drier than neighboring Bali, due to the rain shadow created by Mount Rinjani on Lombok and Mount Agung on Bali. Daytime temperatures hover between 28°C and 32°C (82°F–90°F) throughout the year, accompanied by steady coastal sea breezes.

By Air
No air service operates directly on the Gili Islands. The primary gateway is Lombok International Airport (IATA: ZAM), located in Praya, approximately 60 km south of Bangsal Harbor (the main port for boats to the Gilis). Airlines serving ZAM include Garuda Indonesia, Batik Air, Lion Air, Super Air Jet, Citilink, Wings Air, AirAsia, and Scoot, with nonstop flights from Jakarta (2 hours), Surabaya (1 hour), Bali (30 minutes), Singapore (2.5 hours), and Kuala Lumpur (3 hours). A metered taxi or private car transfer from ZAM to Bangsal Harbor takes 1.5 to 2 hours and costs Rp 300,000–450,000 ($20–$30 USD).
Alternatively, travelers fly into Bali's I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport (IATA: DPS) in Denpasar and connect to the Gili Islands via fast boat from Padang Bai or Sanur.

On the mainland, Perama Tour operates scheduled tourist shuttle buses connecting Bali resort towns (Kuta, Ubud, Sanur) to Padang Bai harbor (1.5 to 2 hours, Rp 125,000–200,000 / $8–$13 USD) as part of combined bus-and-boat packages (Rp 400,000–650,000 / $26–$43 USD). On Lombok, DAMRI public buses connect Lombok International Airport (ZAM) to Mataram's Mandalika Bus Terminal (hourly, 1 hour, Rp 40,000 / $2.65 USD), from where local bemos or taxis continue north to Bangsal Harbor (45 minutes, Rp 100,000–150,000 / $6.50–$10 USD).
By Train
No train service exists on the Gili Islands, Lombok, or Bali.
By Car
No car service operates on the Gili Islands, where motorized transport is banned by local regulation. On mainland Lombok, drivers take Route 1 (Jl. Raya Senggigi along the coast) or the mountain route via Pusuk Monkey Forest to reach Bangsal Harbor. The drive from Mataram is 32 km (45–60 minutes), and from Senggigi is 22 km (30–40 minutes). Secure long-term vehicle parking near Bangsal Harbor costs Rp 20,000–40,000 ($1.30–$2.65 USD) per day.
Motorized transport is prohibited across all three Gili Islands. Transport is limited to non-motorized and animal-powered options:
- On Foot: Walking is practical everywhere. The perimeter of Gili Trawangan is 7 km (about 2 hours to walk around), Gili Air is 5 km (about 1.5 hours), and Gili Meno is 4 km (about 1 hour).
- Bicycles: Single-speed cruiser bikes with fat tires suited for sandy tracks rent for Rp 40,000–75,000 ($2.60–$5 USD) per 24-hour period from guesthouses and street rental stands. Fat-tire electric bicycles are available on Gili Trawangan for Rp 150,000–250,000 ($10–$16 USD) per day.
- Cidomo (Horse Carts): Two-wheeled horse-drawn carriages operated under the local transport cooperative. Fares are fixed by official price boards based on distance, generally ranging from Rp 100,000 to Rp 200,000 ($6.50–$13 USD) per trip for up to three passengers with luggage.

- Apps: Ride-hailing applications such as Grab and Gojek do not operate on the Gili Islands due to the motorized vehicle ban.
What are the things to do?
BASK Nest Underwater Statues (Gili Meno): Created by British sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor, this artificial reef installation features 48 life-sized human figures positioned in a circle 4 meters underwater off Gili Meno's west coast. Corals and sponges have encrusted the statues, attracting schools of damselfish and parrotfish. Snorkelers can access the site directly from the beach or via local snorkeling boats. Entry is free.
Gili Trawangan Hill Viewpoint & WWII Japanese Bunker: The highest geographic elevation across the three islands, located on the southern interior of Gili Trawangan. A 15-minute trail climbs to panoramic viewpoints looking out to Lombok's Mount Rinjani and Bali's Mount Agung. Along the path stand concrete gun emplacements and an overgrown machine-gun bunker built during Japanese wartime occupation. Free entry.
Gili Meno Turtle Sanctuary: A local conservation project situated on the east beach of Gili Meno. The project rescues wild turtle eggs laid on island beaches, incubates them in protected sand pens, and rears green and loggerhead hatchlings in concrete pools until they are strong enough for ocean release. Free entry; voluntary donations are accepted.
Gili Meno Saltwater Lake and Mangrove Reserve: An 8-hectare inland saline lake located on western Gili Meno. Raised timber boardwalks run along the mangrove-fringed perimeter, providing birdwatching vantage points for herons, kingfishers, and migratory shorebirds. Entry is free.
Turtle Point and Halik Reef (Gili Trawangan & Gili Air): Shallow reef drop-offs situated on northern Gili Trawangan and northeast Gili Air where green turtles graze on sea grass and soft coral formations. Visible to snorkelers within 30 to 50 meters of the beach during high tide. Free access.
Pasar Malam (Gili Trawangan Night Market): An open-air food market that convenes every evening near the main boat harbor on Gili Trawangan. Stalls display freshly caught red snapper, barracuda, squid skewers, grilled satay, and vegetable side dishes cooked to order on open charcoal grills. Entry is free; dishes cost Rp 30,000–80,000 ($2–$5.30 USD).
Sunset Beach and Swings (Gili Trawangan Southwest & Gili Air West): Expansive western-facing shorelines equipped with offshore timber swings and hammocks set directly in the shallow intertidal zone, popular for viewing sunsets over the Bali Strait. Free.
Scuba Diving and Certification: The Gili Islands rank among Southeast Asia's top dive training centers, with over 40 PADI and SSI dive schools. Popular dive sites include Shark Point (reef sharks and trevally), Manta Point, Deep Halik, and Glen Nusa Wreck. Standard single guided fun dives cost Rp 550,000–650,000 ($36–$43 USD), while Open Water certification courses run Rp 5,500,000–6,200,000 ($360–$410 USD), subject to the Rp 150,000 ($10 USD) one-time Gili Eco Trust marine park conservation fee.
Freediving Courses: Gili Air and Gili Trawangan host dedicated freediving academies (such as Freedive Air and Freedive Gili) offering 2-day AIDA and Molchanovs beginner courses covering static apnea, equalisation, and depth training to 20 meters (Rp 2,500,000–3,200,000 / $165–$210 USD).
Three-Island Snorkeling Excursions: Join shared glass-bottom boat trips (4 to 5 hours) departing daily from Gili Trawangan, Gili Air, or Gili Meno. Trips include stops at the BASK Nest statues, Turtle Point, and Coral Garden, with snorkeling gear provided (Rp 150,000–250,000 / $10–$16 USD per person; private charter boats cost Rp 700,000–1,200,000 / $46–$80 USD).
Surfing the Reef Breaks: Gili Trawangan's southwest reef break delivers fast, hollow right-hand waves during southern swells at mid-to-high tide. Gili Air features a right-hander reef break on its southern tip known as "Playgrounds." Surfboard rentals cost Rp 50,000–100,000 ($3.30–$6.50 USD) for 2 hours.
Yoga and Wellness Classes: Drop-in yoga sessions in open-air bamboo shalas operate multiple times daily at studios like Flowers & Fire (Gili Air) and The Yoga Garden (Gili Trawangan). Drop-in classes cost Rp 120,000–150,000 ($8–$10 USD).
Sunset Horseback Riding: Stable operators on Gili Trawangan (such as Sunset Stables) organize guided rides along the western beaches during low tide (Rp 350,000–500,000 / $23–$33 USD per hour).
