Yanam

Puducherry, India

Why visit Yanam?

Yanam is a small enclave of the Puducherry union territory surrounded entirely by Andhra Pradesh's Godavari delta region. With a population of just 32,000, it is the least populated of the four former French territories that make up discontiguous Puducherry. Located on the banks of the Gautami Godavari River, Yanam was a French colony from the 18th century until 1954, and faint traces of French influence remain — especially in the Catholic Church's stained glass (dating to 1846), the Palais de Justice, and the French cemetery.

The dominant language is Telugu, though a few elderly residents still speak some French. Yanam's compact size (30 km²) and riverside setting make it a quiet, offbeat destination for travellers interested in colonial history and the Godavari delta. The climate is tropical: the best time to visit is November to February when it is cooler and drier. Summers (March–June) are very hot, and the monsoon (July–October) brings heavy rain to the delta.

The town centres around a small grid of streets with colonial-era buildings, temples, and a mosque. The Yanam Ferry Road offers scenic views of the river.
