Mahe

Puducherry, India

Why visit Mahe?

Mahe is a tiny enclave of the Puducherry union territory surrounded entirely by Kerala's Kannur district, on the Malabar Coast. At just 4 km², it is one of India's smallest administrative units — a former French colony sandwiched between the Arabian Sea and the National Highway. Despite its French heritage, little colonial character remains; the town has been overdeveloped into a typical busy Kerala village, and the highway that cuts through it is crowded with traffic.

The main reason to visit Mahe is its unique tax status. Because it is not part of Kerala state, consumer goods and especially alcohol are significantly cheaper here than in the surrounding region. This makes it a popular pit stop for shoppers and liquor buyers. The town is also a convenient base for exploring the nearby Kannur beaches, Thalassery, and the broader Malabar region. The best time to visit is October to March when the weather is dry and pleasant; the southwest monsoon (June–September) brings very heavy rainfall.

Mahe is walkable in theory, but the heavy highway traffic makes it unpleasant. Most visitors spend no more than a day here, using it as a quick stop on a larger Kerala itinerary.

How do you get there?

By Plane

Kannur International Airport (CNN IATA) is the nearest airport, about 30 km south. A taxi to Mahe takes around 40 minutes and costs approximately ₹800–1,000. Calicut International Airport (CCJ IATA) is about 120 km south.

By Train

Mahe railway station is on the Mangalore–Thiruvananthapuram Konkan line, with frequent services from Kannur (15 min), Thalassery, Kozhikode, and Mangalore. The station is small but well-connected.

By Car / Road

Mahe lies directly on National Highway 66, about 5 km south of Kannur town and 20 km north of Thalassery. Frequent Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) and private buses connect it to Kannur, Thalassery, Kozhikode, and Mangalore. From Kannur town, the bus ride is about 15 minutes.

Mahe's total area is only 4 km², so walking between most points is quick in distance. However, the National Highway runs straight through town with heavy, noisy traffic, making walking unpleasant. Auto-rickshaws are available for short hops (₹30–50). Bicycle rentals are not readily available.
