Odisha

Odisha (formerly spelt Orissa) is an eastern coastal state of India, fronting the Bay of Bengal and tracing its identity to the ancient kingdom of Kalinga. It splits into two distinct worlds: a prosperous, temple-studded eastern coastal belt that holds the bulk of the state's tourist draws, and a hilly, forested western interior — drought-prone, mineral-rich and home to a deep tapestry of tribal cultures.

For travellers, Odisha is best known for the "Golden Triangle" of Bhubaneswar, Puri and Konark — a compact circuit of temple architecture that culminates in the UNESCO-listed Sun Temple at Konark. Beyond it lie wide Bay of Bengal beaches, the vast lagoon of Chilika Lake, mangrove and tiger forests, and Buddhist ruins of the Diamond Triangle.

The state is also a craft powerhouse — Sambalpuri ikat weaving, silver filigree from Cuttack and Pattachitra scroll painting are all rooted here. Odias are known for warm hospitality, and the society has a long reputation for being peaceful and tolerant. Odia (Oriya) is the local language; Hindi and English are widely understood, with Bengali common in tourist centres and Telugu spoken in the southwest.

The cool, dry season from October to February is by far the best time to travel, with comfortable days ideal for temple visits, beaches and Chilika boat trips. Summers (March–June) are hot and humid, and the monsoon (roughly June–September) brings heavy rain. Coastal Odisha is prone to cyclones, with the risk window stretching from May to November — check forecasts if travelling in those months.

Time a visit around the Rath Yatra (Chariot Festival) in Puri, usually in June/July, when enormous wooden chariots of Lord Jagannath are hauled through the streets by huge crowds. The Konark Dance Festival (December) sets classical Odissi dance against the Sun Temple. Raja Parba (mid-June) and Durga Puja / Dussehra (autumn) are also celebrated widely.

Odisha has a dense rail network; Bhubaneswar is the main hub, with frequent trains to Cuttack, Puri, Brahmapur (Berhampur), Sambalpur and Rourkela. The Bhubaneswar–Puri line (around 60 km) is the workhorse route for the Golden Triangle.

Bhubaneswar's Biju Patnaik International Airport (BBI) is the only major airport, well connected to Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru. By road, Konark sits about 35 km from Puri and 65 km from Bhubaneswar, making a one-day temple loop easy. State and private buses link all major towns; for flexible Golden Triangle and Chilika sightseeing, a hired car with driver is the most comfortable option. Within cities, taxis, app-cabs and autorickshaws are widely available — autos are cheaper but often shared.

Odia cooking is subtle, rice-centred and famously fond of sweets. Rice with dal, vegetable curries and achar forms the staple lunch and dinner, while breakfast leans on chuda (flattened rice, often as Chudaa Dahi with curd, banana and sugar), mudhi (puffed rice — a popular north Odisha snack) and various pitha (rice and lentil cakes).

The signature sweet is chhena poda — slow-baked caramelised cheese with semolina, cardamom and ghee — a delicacy said to be unique to Odisha. Rasagulla, traditionally claimed by Puri's temple kitchens and roadside dhabas, comes in white and caramelised brown varieties. Coastal districts offer rich seafood curries with fish, tiger prawns and crab. Green coconut water and sugarcane juice are everywhere; local fruit-and-grain country liquors are known as mada.

Odisha's cultural calendar revolves around Lord Jagannath. The Rath Yatra in Puri (June/July) is the state's signature event, drawing hundreds of thousands to pull the chariots. The Konark Dance Festival (December) showcases Odissi, the state's graceful classical dance form. Raja Parba (mid-June) celebrates womanhood and the earth, while Durga Puja / Dussehra is observed across the state in autumn.

Crafts are a living tradition: Sambalpuri and Kataki ikat sarees in cotton, silk and tussar; silver filigree (tarakasi) from Cuttack; fine tribal brass and metal-wire work; and Pattachitra, intricate painting on palm-leaf or treated cloth. The western tribal belt preserves distinct music, dance and dress.
