Why visit Ukhrul?

Ukhrul (also known as Hunphun) is the administrative headquarters of Ukhrul district in the hill region of Manipur, around 85 km northeast of Imphal. The town sits at an elevation of about 1,800 m in the Manipur Hills, surrounded by pine forests, terraced fields, and the lush peaks of the Shirui range. It is the gateway to the world-famous Shirui lily (Lilium macklineae), a rare and exquisite flower that blooms only on the slopes of Shirui Peak, making the area a destination for botanists, trekkers, and nature lovers.

The town is predominantly inhabited by the Tangkhul Naga community, with a distinct culture, cuisine, and dialect. The annual Shirui Festival (third week of May) celebrates the blooming of the lily with cultural performances, traditional sports, and local food. The best time to visit is May–June for the lily bloom, or October–March for trekking in pleasant weather. The monsoon (June–September) brings heavy rain and landslides.

Ukhrul is compact, centred around Gandhi Circle, with basic amenities, a few hotels, and restaurants. It serves as a base for exploring Sirohi National Park and surrounding tribal villages.
