Bishnupur (Manipur)
Manipur, India
Why visit Bishnupur (Manipur)?
Bishnupur is a district in Manipur, located in the Imphal Valley about 27 km south of Imphal city. It is named after the Hindu god Vishnu and is best known for two extraordinary natural attractions: Loktak Lake — the largest freshwater lake in northeastern India — and Keibul Lamjao National Park, the world's only floating national park. The park's unique phumdis (floating mats of decomposed plant material) support the endangered Sangai or Manipur brow-antlered deer (Cervus eldi eldi), also called the Dancing Deer, which is the state animal of Manipur.
The district headquarters town is small but serves as the gateway to these natural wonders. The Moirang area within the district is historically significant for the INA (Indian National Army) connections and the Ebudhou Thangjing Temple. The best time to visit is November to March when the weather is dry and pleasant. The monsoon (June–September) brings heavy rain, and phumdis shift dramatically with the water levels.
Bishnupur town is compact, with basic amenities. Most visitors stay in Imphal and visit as a day trip.
