Why visit Jiribam?
Jiribam (also called Jiri in Meitei/Manipuri) is a small town in western Manipur, sitting at the meeting point of the Manipur hills and the Barak River plains. It is the only town in Manipur with a functional railway station, making it the state's sole railhead and an important gateway for goods and passengers entering Manipur from Assam. Geographically, Jiribam is an eastern extension of the Barak valley and the broader Ganga-Brahmaputra plains, distinct from the Imphal Valley across the hills.
The population is predominantly Meitei, with significant tribal and Assamese communities. The Barak and Jiri rivers define the landscape, with agricultural farmlands and a tropical, humid climate. The best time to visit is October to March when the weather is dry and pleasant; the monsoon (June–September) brings very heavy rainfall.
Jiribam is not a tourist town in the conventional sense but serves as a transit point and a base for exploring the Barak Valley, the Jiri river, and the cultural interface between Meitei and Indo-Aryan traditions.
