Why visit Shiroda?

Shiroda sits across the Zuari River from Salcete taluka, roughly 16 km south of Ponda town and 18 km northeast of Margao. The village developed its religious prominence in the late 16th century, when Hindu devotees moved sacred deities across the river from Portuguese-controlled territories to the safety of the Adil Shahi Sultanate's lands in the New Conquests. Today, traditional Goan houses with tiled roofs and wide verandas sit alongside terraced paddy fields, betel nut plantations, and cashew orchards.

Unlike coastal resort towns, Shiroda maintains an agricultural rhythm. The village bazaar operates along the main Ponda–Shiroda road, supplying residents, pilgrims, and students from the nearby Ayurvedic and engineering colleges. The waterfront along the Zuari River remains an active crossing point, where government-operated flat-deck ferries carry passengers and vehicles to the neighboring village of Rachol.

Climate

Shiroda has a tropical monsoon climate. Temperatures remain warm throughout the year, typically ranging between 20°C (68°F) at night in the winter to 36°C (97°F) during the pre-monsoon heat of April and May. The southwest monsoon brings heavy seasonal rainfall from June through September, filling local river tributaries and creating fertile agricultural conditions across the taluka.
