Ongole
Andhra Pradesh, India
Why visit Ongole?
Ongole is the headquarters of Prakasam district in the coastal belt of Andhra Pradesh, lying on the busy National Highway 16 (the old Kolkata–Chennai trunk road) roughly midway between Vijayawada and Chennai. It is best known worldwide for the Ongole breed of cattle — powerful, hump-backed draught and beef animals that have been exported to Brazil, the United States and Australia, where they form the foundation of several tropical cattle lines. The annual cattle show remains a point of local pride, and a large bull statue greets travellers at the edge of town.
The city itself is a working commercial and agricultural centre rather than a polished tourist resort: tobacco, chillies, granite and aquaculture drive the local economy, and the streets around the bus stand and railway station are dense with traders, lodges and small eateries. What rewards a visitor is the surrounding district — a coastline of quiet beaches, old Vaishnavite and Shaivite temples, and the remarkable 2nd-century-BCE Buddhist remains at Chandavaram a couple of hours inland.
Ongole has a hot, humid coastal climate. The best time to visit is the cooler, drier window from October to March; April to June is fiercely hot, and the southwest and northeast monsoons (June–September and October–November) can bring heavy spells and the occasional cyclone off the Bay of Bengal. Aim for the winter months for any beach or temple touring.

Ask on WhatsAppHow do you get there?
By Plane
Ongole has no commercial airport. The nearest is Vijayawada International Airport (IATA: VGA) at Gannavaram, about 170 km north, with domestic flights to Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai and Delhi plus a few international services. Chennai International Airport (IATA: MAA), about 330 km south, and Tirupati Airport (IATA: TIR), around 200 km, are alternatives with wider connectivity. From any of these, continue to Ongole by train, APSRTC bus or pre-booked taxi.
By Train
Ongole railway station (station code OGL) sits on the Howrah–Chennai main line in the Vijayawada division of South Central Railway and is a regular stop for express and superfast trains running between Chennai, Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, Hyderabad and Kolkata. It is a busy halt, so most long-distance trains down the east coast call here. Reserve well ahead on popular Chennai–Vijayawada and Vande Bharat services, especially during festival periods; book through IRCTC or at the station counter.
By Car / Road
Ongole lies directly on NH16, which makes road access straightforward. Approximate driving distances and times: Vijayawada about 160 km (3–4 hours via NH16/NH65); Guntur about 70 km; Chennai about 330 km (6–7 hours); Hyderabad about 330 km; Nellore about 120 km to the south. The highway is a good-quality four-lane road for most of the route. APSRTC and private operators run frequent buses to Guntur, Vijayawada, Nellore, Chennai and Hyderabad from the Ongole bus stand near the city centre.
Ongole is compact and the core around the bus stand and railway station is walkable. Auto-rickshaws are the workhorse of local transport — agree the fare before setting off, as meters are rarely used; short hops within town are inexpensive, while runs to outlying beaches and temples should be negotiated as a round trip with waiting time. Cycle-rickshaws still ply some inner lanes. App-based cabs have limited availability, so for trips to Kothapatnam Beach, Chandavaram or Bhairavakona it is usually easiest to hire a taxi or auto for the day through your hotel. City buses cover the main corridors but are infrequent for sightseeing purposes.
What are the things to do?
Temples
- Sri Prasanna Chennakesava Swamy Temple — a Vishnu temple traced to the late 16th century under Vijayanagara-era patrons; the principal Vaishnavite shrine in the town. Open during the usual morning and evening darshan hours; no ticket.
- Kashi Visweswara Swamy Temple — a Shiva temple on the banks of the Kusasthali (Gundlakamma) river, built in the mid-20th century and an active local place of worship.
- Lakshmi Narasimha Temple, Malakonda — a hill shrine to Lord Vishnu as Lakshmi Narasimha, reached by a long flight of rock-cut steps (around 500); a popular pilgrimage climb southwest of the city.
Beaches
- Kothapatnam Beach — about 18 km from the city, the closest and most popular beach, with boating and simple snack stalls; busy at weekends.
- Ramakrishna Beach — a more developed stretch with eateries and family play areas.
Heritage and nature (district)
Chandavaram Buddhist Site — a major early Buddhist complex dating to about the 2nd century BCE, with a large stupa on a hillock above the Gundlakamma river; an inland excursion well worth the drive for those interested in archaeology.
Bhairavakona — a scenic spot in the Nallamala foothills with a seasonal waterfall and rock-cut cave temples, a longer day trip from Ongole.
Beach day trips — pair Kothapatnam with the Chirala–Vodarevu coast for swimming, boating and seafood; go early in the day to avoid the heat.
Temple circuit — combine the in-town Chennakesava and Kashi Visweswara temples with a half-day climb to Malakonda for the hill shrine and views.
Buddhist heritage excursion — drive out to the Chandavaram stupa, ideally combined with a riverside picnic.
Cattle country — Ongole's identity is bound up with its famous bulls; the periodic cattle shows and rural fairs are a window into local agrarian life if your visit coincides with one.

Ask on WhatsAppWhere to eat?
Ongole sits firmly in Andhra's fiery culinary tradition: expect generous use of red chilli, tamarind and gunpowder (karam podi), with rice as the staple. Vegetarian "meals" thalis served on a plate or banana leaf are ubiquitous and excellent value, while the coastal location means fresh seafood — prawns and fish curries — is widely available. Look for Andhra-style biryani, gongura (sorrel-leaf) dishes, and spicy chicken and mutton curries.
- Eateries around the bus stand — the densest cluster of restaurants, from pure-veg meals halls to non-veg "military"-style mess kitchens; cheap and authentic.
- Hotel Sindoori restaurant — its in-house vegetarian restaurant and coffee shop are a reliable mid-range sit-down option.
- Mourya Inn restaurant — an on-premises restaurant convenient for travellers staying centrally.
Vegetarian food is easy to find everywhere; ask the kitchen for "less spicy" (takkuva karam) if Andhra heat is new to you.
Where to drink?
Non-alcoholic staples are South Indian filter coffee, sweet milky tea (chai), fresh lime soda and tender coconut water sold from roadside carts — refreshing in the coastal heat. Buttermilk (majjiga) and lassi are common with meals. Alcohol is sold through licensed wine shops and the bars of larger hotels; Andhra Pradesh's liquor policy and pricing change periodically, so availability and rates vary. Tap water is not safe to drink — stick to sealed bottled water or boiled/filtered water, which hotels and restaurants provide.

Ask on WhatsAppWhere to stay?
- Budget: Hotel Sree Kanya and Hotel Sowmya Inn offer clean, simple rooms in the roughly ₹1,000–1,700 range, both handy for the bus stand and station. OYO-branded lodges around the centre are a similar price.
- Mid-range: Hotel Sindoori (from around ₹1,800) and Central Park Hotel (from around ₹1,500) provide air-conditioned rooms, in-house restaurants and parking. Mourya Inn is another well-kept central choice.
- Upscale: Ongole's top-end stock is thin; Hotel Sarovar is among the better-appointed full-service hotels in town. For a resort-style stay near the coast, look to beach properties around Kothapatnam and Chirala.
What should you buy?
Ongole's markets serve everyday needs more than tourists, but a few things are worth seeking out. The district is a major producer of tobacco and dried red chillies, sold in bulk at local mandis. Andhra granite is quarried and polished around the region. In town, the bazaars near the bus stand carry cotton handloom textiles, brassware and the usual temple-town pooja items and sweets. Bargaining is normal in the open markets and with auto drivers; fixed-price shops and chain stores are not negotiable.
Where to go next?
- Chirala (about 40 km north) — coastal town famous for handloom weaving and the long Vodarevu beach.
- Guntur (about 70 km north) — major commercial city, chilli capital and gateway to the Amaravati Buddhist and Andhra-capital sites.
- Vijayawada (about 160 km north) — bustling transport hub on the Krishna river, with the Kanaka Durga temple and Undavalli caves.
- Nellore (about 120 km south) — temple town on the Pennar river, known for its Ranganatha temple, with Pulicat and Nelapattu birdlife further south.
- Srisailam (inland, longer drive) — major Shaiva pilgrimage centre and tiger reserve in the Nallamala hills.
- Bhairavakona (district excursion) — cave temples and a seasonal waterfall in the forested foothills.
