The town is a predominantly Kaqchikel Maya community with a population of around 60,000 in the municipality (one of the larger in the department). San Martin Jilotepeque sits at approximately 1,800 meters elevation, with a mild climate (10–24°C). The town has historical significance — it was the site of a major indigenous uprising in 1898 against forced labor. Today, it is a bustling market town that serves as a commercial center for the surrounding agricultural communities. The weekly market is one of the largest in the department.

The nearest airport is La Aurora International Airport (GUA) in Guatemala City, about 85 km south. A taxi or private transfer takes about 2 hours.

By Train

No passenger rail service is available.

By Car / Road

From Chimaltenango, head north on the road toward San Martin Jilotepeque — about 35 km, 1 hour on winding highland roads. From Guatemala City, take CA-1 west to Chimaltenango, then north — about 85 km, 2 hours. Chicken buses run from Chimaltenango to San Martin Jilotepeque; the fare is about Q15.

The town center is small and walkable. Tuk-tuks are available for local trips (Q5–10). Minibuses connect with surrounding villages and Chimaltenango. The surrounding agricultural areas are accessible by local roads.
