Crochu

Saint Andrew, Grenada

Why visit Crochu?

Crochu is a small hillside village in the parish of Saint Andrew, Grenada, situated in the interior highlands above the Atlantic coast. The village sits at an elevated position offering sweeping views across the eastern parishes and out to the open ocean. It is a quiet, agricultural community surrounded by nutmeg, cocoa, and banana plantations that define the landscape of northeastern Grenada.

The village has no formal tourist infrastructure — no hotels, restaurants, or visitor centres. Crochu is the kind of place you visit for the views, the walking, and the authentic rural Grenadian atmosphere. The pace of life is slow and tied to the agricultural calendar, with harvest seasons dictating the rhythm of daily activity.

Crochu has a tropical climate, slightly cooler than the coast due to its elevation. The dry season from January to May is the best time to visit, when roads are in good condition and views are clearest. The wet season (June–December) brings lush greenery but also muddy paths and reduced visibility.

By Plane

The nearest airport is Maurice Bishop International Airport (GND) near St George's, approximately 35 km away. By Car / Road

Crochu is reached by turning off the main east coast road between Grenville and the south. The village road branches inland and uphill from the coastal route, climbing steeply through agricultural land. From Grenville, the drive is approximately 15–20 minutes. Roads are paved to a point but become narrow and pot-holed as they climb toward the village. A vehicle with good ground clearance is recommended in the wet season.

Crochu is a small village best explored on foot. There are no paved sidewalks — residents walk on the road or along informal paths between houses. The village is spread along a single main road with side paths leading to scattered homesteads on the surrounding hillsides.

Minibuses do not serve Crochu regularly. Transport is by private vehicle, taxi from Grenville (approximately 25–35 XCD / US$9–13), or by arrangement with local residents who offer informal taxi services. Walking between the main cluster of houses takes 10–15 minutes.

What are the things to do?

  • Panoramic hillside views — Crochu's elevated position provides some of the best unobstructed views on the eastern side of the island, looking out over the Atlantic and the patchwork of plantations below.

  • Nutmeg and cocoa plantations — The surrounding hillsides are covered in spice and cocoa groves. Walking along the village roads offers close-up views of how these crops are cultivated, with drying racks and processing areas visible at some estates.

  • Village church and community centre — The small church is the social hub of the village. Its simple architecture reflects the modest character of the community.

  • Forest trails — Informal paths lead from the village into the interior rainforest, where birdwatching opportunities include the endemic Grenada dove and various hummingbird species.

  • Hillside walking — The roads and paths around Crochu offer gentle to moderate walking through agricultural landscapes with constant ocean views. Best in the early morning before the heat builds.

  • Birdwatching — The forested areas around the village are habitat for the Grenada dove (the national bird, critically endangered), the hook-billed kite, and the purple-throated carib hummingbird.

  • Farm visits — Local farmers may be willing to show visitors their cocoa and nutmeg operations. These are informal arrangements — ask at the village or your guesthouse.

  • Photography — The combination of elevation, ocean views, lush vegetation, and traditional wooden houses makes Crochu rewarding for photographers.
