Dambai is the capital of the Oti Region and also serves as the seat of Krachi East Municipal, the district it sits within. Oti Region was carved out of the northern part of Volta Region in December 2018 and inaugurated on 14 May 2019, one of six new regions created in that reorganisation. Dambai is a lakeside town on the eastern shore of Lake Volta, the world's largest reservoir by surface area; ferries connect it across the lake to Kpando in the Volta Region.
