Aspindza

Samtskhe-Javakheti, Georgia

Why visit Aspindza?

Aspindza (Georgian: ასპინძა) is a small town in the Samtskhe-Javakheti region, located about 25 km south of Akhaltsikhe in the Mtkvari (Kura) River valley, with a population of roughly 2,800 at the last census. Its name derives from a Persian word meaning "a place to rest." The town's foundation is traditionally dated to 888, and by the late 16th century it had come under Ottoman control; its hilltop fortress, built on a rocky promontory above the river with a rectangular walled layout and two towers, reflects this history of conflict between Georgian, Ottoman, and Persian forces in the region. Aspindza is a gateway to the Vardzia cave monastery, one of Georgia's most important historical sites, and the surrounding area is known for its fruit orchards and wine production.
