Why visit Tanji River Bird Reserve?

The Tanji River Bird Reserve is a protected coastal wetland and bird sanctuary in Western Gambia, located on the Atlantic coast about 25 km south of Banjul. The reserve encompasses the mouth of the Tanji River, a stretch of sandy beach, coastal lagoon, and scrub-covered dunes. It was established in 1993 as a designated Important Bird Area (IBA) and covers approximately 600 hectares.

The reserve is one of the best birdwatching sites in The Gambia, with over 300 recorded species. It is particularly important for migratory waders and seabirds. Between October and April, large flocks of palearctic migrants join the resident species. The site is also a major nesting ground for sea turtles (green and loggerhead turtles) between June and October.

The climate follows the Gambian pattern: a dry season from November to May and a rainy season from June to October. The best time for birdwatching is November to April, when migratory species are present and the weather is dry. The adjacent fishing village of Tanji provides a cultural counterpoint to the natural setting, with its colourful pirogue fleet and lively fish landing beach.

The reserve is best explored on foot along the beach and the lagoon edge. The terrain is flat and easy walking. A local guide from the village can show you the best birding spots.
