Narbonne was the first Roman colony in Gaul (118 BC) and the capital of Roman Gallia Narbonensis. Today, the city is best known for its spectacular unfinished Gothic cathedral, its Roman warehouse (Horreum), and its position on the Canal du Midi. The nearby Narbonnaise coastal lagoon is a nature reserve of exceptional beauty.
