Why visit Saint-Georges?
Saint-Georges, also called Saint-Georges-de-l'Oyapock, is a French commune in the east of French Guiana. It stands on the left bank of the Oyapock, the river that forms the border with Brazil, directly opposite the Brazilian town of Oiapoque. The river mouth is about 60 km to the north. The commune covers 2,320 km² and had 4,915 inhabitants in 2023. It became a sub-prefecture on 26 October 2022.
The village grew out of a 19th-century penal settlement built entirely of wood, so none of it survives. The commune was created in 1950, when it was split from Ouanary.
