Kourou

Guyane (française), France

Why visit Kourou?

Kourou is a coastal town in French Guiana, best known as the home of the Guiana Space Centre (Centre Spatial Guyanais), the European Space Agency's primary launch facility. With a population of around 25,000, the town has a unique character blending space-age technology with tropical surroundings. Founded in the 17th century, Kourou experienced a major transformation in the 1960s when France chose it as its spaceport due to its proximity to the equator — ideal for rocket launches. Kourou is also the departure point for boats to the Îles du Salut (Salvation Islands), including the infamous Devil's Island.
