Vichy

Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

Why visit Vichy?

Vichy sits along the Allier River in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of central France. The town developed internationally during the 19th and early 20th centuries as a premier European spa resort, heavily expanded under Emperor Napoleon III. In 2021, UNESCO inscribed Vichy on the World Heritage list as part of the Great Spa Towns of Europe, recognizing its surviving mineral spring halls, grand bathhouses, covered promenades, and Belle Époque villas.

Beyond its spa traditions, Vichy carries significant 20th-century history as the administrative seat of the French State during World War II between 1940 and 1944. Today, visitors travel here for therapeutic balneotherapy, Art Nouveau and eclectic architecture, rowing and sailing on the Lac d'Allier reservoir, and opera productions.

The local climate is temperate and semi-continental. Summers bring warm, sunny days tempered by river breezes, while winters are cold with occasional frost and overcast skies.

How do you get there?

By Train

Gare de Vichy, situated on Place de la Gare, connects directly to national and regional rail networks operated by SNCF:

  • Intercités (Paris-Bercy to Clermont-Ferrand line): 8 to 10 direct trains daily run between Paris-Bercy Bourgogne-Pays d'Auvergne and Vichy. The journey takes 2 hours 55 minutes to 3 hours 15 minutes. Both first-class and second-class seating are available, with one-way standard fares ranging from €20 ($22 USD) booked in advance to €65 ($71 USD) on the day of travel.
  • TER Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes: Regional trains run hourly to Clermont-Ferrand (30 minutes; €9 to €11 / $10 to $12 USD), Lyon Part-Dieu or Lyon Perrache (1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours; €24 to €30 / $26 to $33 USD), and Moulins-sur-Allier (25 to 30 minutes; €8 to €10 / $9 to $11 USD). Tickets can be purchased at station vending machines or via the SNCF Connect app.

By Bus

  • Regional Buses (Cars Région Allier): Regional lines managed by the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes transport network connect the Vichy bus hub outside the train station with towns across the department, including Line B01 to Moulins and Line B02 to Montluçon. Fares start at €3.00 ($3.30 USD) per one-way trip.
  • Long-Distance Coaches: Long-distance operators such as FlixBus do not operate high-frequency direct terminals inside Vichy itself; passengers travelling by intercity coach typically travel via Clermont-Ferrand and take a 30-minute TER train into Vichy. BlaBlaCar carpooling departures between Paris, Lyon, and Vichy run daily, costing approximately €15 to €25 ($16 to $27 USD).

By Car

Vichy links directly to France's autoroute network:

  • From Paris (350 km / 217 miles, ~3.5 to 4 hours): Follow the A71 south toward Clermont-Ferrand, take exit 12 onto the A719 spur directly into Vichy. Tolls total approximately €30 ($33 USD).
  • From Clermont-Ferrand (55 km / 34 miles, ~45 to 50 minutes): Take the A71 north, then exit onto the A719 directly into the town center.
  • From Lyon (140 km / 87 miles, ~1 hour 45 minutes): Follow the A89 west toward Roanne/Clermont-Ferrand, exiting onto the D907 and N7 into Vichy.

By Air

  • Clermont-Ferrand Auvergne Airport (CFE): Located 65 km (40 miles) south of Vichy (~50 minutes by car or 35 minutes by direct train from Aulnat-Aéroport to Clermont-Ferrand). Air France operates domestic flights connecting to Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG, 1 hour flight time).

  • Lyon-Saint Exupéry Airport (LYS): Located 175 km (109 miles) east (~2 hours by car or 2 hours 15 minutes by Rhônexpress tram and TER train from Lyon Part-Dieu). Serviced by major carriers including Air France, Lufthansa, British Airways, and easyJet, offering direct flights to destinations across Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.

  • On Foot: The central spa quarter, Parc des Sources, shopping streets, and river promenade are located within short walking distances of one another, making foot travel the most practical way to explore central sights.

  • Local Bus (MobiVie): The urban bus network operates 8 lines (A to H) serving Vichy, Cusset, and Bellerive-sur-Allier. Single tickets cost €1.25 ($1.35 USD) purchased from the driver, and a 24-hour pass costs €3.40 ($3.70 USD). Timetables and route maps are available via the MobiVie app and at mobivie.fr.

  • Bicycle (Vivélo): Vichy operates the Vivélo bike-share system, with docking stations at the train station, town hall, and along the riverbank. Short-term rentals cost around €1 ($1.10 USD) per hour or €5 ($5.45 USD) for a daily pass. Dedicated cycle tracks run along both banks of the Allier River.

  • Taxi: Taxis wait at the station rank on Place de la Gare or can be booked through Taxi Vichy (+33 4 70 98 69 69). Fares across town typically range between €10 and €18 ($11 to $20 USD).
