Miehikkala
Kymenlaakso, Finland
Why visit Miehikkala?
Miehikkälä is a small municipality in Kymenlaakso, southeastern Finland, close to the Vaalimaa border crossing into Russia (in neighbouring Virolahti), with a population of around 1,650 — the smallest in the region. It is best known for the Salpa Line Museum, a military history museum in the woods and rocky terrain outside the town centre, presenting the Salpa Line (Salpalinja) — a roughly 1,200 km World War II-era defensive fortification line, one of the strongest and best-preserved in Europe. The museum, opened in 1987 by the municipality and WWII veteran organisations, includes bunkers, trenches, and army dugouts from the period, with guided tours available.
