Meki
Oromia, Ethiopia
Why visit Meki?
Meki is a town in the East Shewa Zone of Oromia, in Ethiopia's Rift Valley, at an elevation of about 1,636 m, and serves as the administrative centre of Dugda woreda. It sits on the Meki River, which in the 1920s was crossed by a rudimentary bridge made from a large fallen tree trunk, modified by a local farmer for motorcar use — one of the few documented details from the town's early 20th-century history. Meki is also the seat of the Apostolic Vicariate of Meki of the Catholic Church, which runs a local school in the town. It functions today primarily as a market and administrative centre for the surrounding agricultural communities of the Rift Valley.
