Mojo
Oromia, Ethiopia
Why visit Mojo?
Mojo (also spelled Modjo), named for the nearby Modjo River, is a town in the East Shewa Zone of Oromia at an elevation of roughly 1,790–1,825 m. It has been a railway town since 1915, when the Addis Ababa–Djibouti line was extended from Dire Dawa to Akaki and a station was built here, bringing telegraph (later telephone) service and a station restaurant. Its role expanded enormously with the establishment of the Modjo Dry Port in 2009, which grew into Ethiopia's largest inland dry port and the country's main hub for domestic and international freight — a spur line connecting the port directly to the railway became operational at the end of 2017. Mojo today functions primarily as this logistics and transport hub rather than as a tourist destination.
