Luunja

Why visit Luunja?
Luunja is a riverside small borough (alevik) in Tartu County, situated along the north bank of the Emajõgi River roughly 13 kilometres east of Tartu. Formed around an estate established in the 16th century, Luunja has developed into an agricultural and recreational settlement known across Estonia for competitive equestrian breeding and large-scale greenhouse farming.
The borough sits along the main inland waterway connecting Lake Võrtsjärv in central Estonia to Lake Peipus on the eastern border. Travelers visit Luunja to explore its historic manor park and rose garden, dock at its small-craft river harbor, cycle along the paved regional trail from Tartu, or use the area as a launching point for exploring the protected wetlands of the Emajõgi river basin.
Luunja experiences a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons. Summers (June to August) are warm and green, with long daylight hours and daytime temperatures between 18°C and 23°C. Winters (December to March) bring persistent sub-zero temperatures, snow cover, and frozen river conditions, with temperatures regularly dropping between -3°C and -8°C.

From central Tartu, head east on Route 45 (Tartu–Räpina–Värska road) for 10 km, then turn south onto Route 222 (Luunja tee) directly into the borough. From Tallinn, take the E263/Route 2 highway southeast to Tartu (180 km), then continue on Route 45 for a total journey of 195 km (about 2 hours and 15 minutes). Free public parking is available near the Luunja Manor Park and the river harbor.
