Why visit Kambja?
Kambja is a small borough (alevik) of roughly 680 residents in Tartu County, located 19 km south of Tartu along national road 2 (E263). Despite its modest size, Kambja holds a central place in Estonian educational and musical history:
- In 1686, pastor Andreas Virginius established one of Estonia's first schools for peasant children here. Local student Ignatsi Jaak was taken to Stockholm to demonstrate literacy before Swedish King Karl XI.
- In 1686, the New Testament was translated into South Estonian by Andreas and Adrian Virginius in the parish.
- In 1794, vicar Heinrich Andreas Erxleben founded the first Estonian parish choir in Kambja, establishing the village's reputation as the cradle of Estonian choir singing.
The settlement centers on St. Martin's Church, the Vastse-Kambja manor building, and the surrounding farm and forest terrain of the South Estonian rolling hills.

What are the things to do?
St. Martin's Church (Kambja kirik): Originally built in the 14th century, this stone church is the largest rural church in Southern Estonia. Destroyed during WWII in 1944, it stood as a roofless shell until restoration began in 1989; it was reconsecrated in 2009. In the churchyard stand memorial stones to peasant schoolmaster Ignatsi Jaak, teacher Bengt Gottfried Forselius, and the 1794 choir, along with an oak tree planted by Swedish Crown Prince Gustaf Adolf in 1932.
Vastse-Kambja Manor (Vastse-Kambja mõis): Located at Kesk 2, the late 18th-century main house of the former knight manor now houses the Kambja parish municipal offices. The building overlooks a small park along the Kambja stream.
Suure-Kambja Manor Park (Suure-Kambja mõisa park): Located 1.5 km south of the village center. While the main wooden manor house burned down in 1998, the historic forest park surrounding the mill pond remains intact. It contains two 250-year-old European larches—the oldest in Estonia—alongside rare introduced species like butternut and Chinese white poplar.
Kambja Health Trails (Kambja terviseroad / Kopsumägi): Located 2 km south of the village at Kopsumägi hill. Offers marked 2 km, 3 km, and 5 km dirt trails through pine forest for walking, running, and mountain biking. In winter, the loops are groomed for cross-country skiing, and parts of the trail are illuminated.
Lake Pangodi (Pangodi järv): Located 10 km west via road 225. Part of the Pangodi Landscape Reserve, the lake offers a public sandy swimming beach, wooden footbridges, picnic spots, and a 3 km nature trail around the shore.
