Why visit Palivere?

Palivere is a small rural borough (alevik) of around 650 residents in Lääne-Nigula Parish, Lääne County, situated 21 km east of Haapsalu and 78 km southwest of Tallinn along Route 9 (Ääsmäe–Haapsalu–Rohuküla highway). Historically a stop along the Keila–Haapsalu railway line, the settlement is best known today as a destination for outdoor sports, set among pine forests, glacial sand dunes, and nearby bogs. The wooden 1905 Palivere railway station building stands as a landmark near the center, while the former rail line has been converted into the Läänemaa Health Trail (Läänemaa Tervisetee).

How do you get there?

By Car

Drive 78 km southwest from Tallinn via Route 9 (Ääsmäe–Haapsalu–Rohuküla highway), which takes approximately 1 hour and 10 minutes. From Haapsalu, take Route 9 east for 21 km (about 20 minutes). Free parking is available at the Palivere Sports Center and near the village shop.

By Bus

Regional buses run regularly from Tallinn Bus Station (Tallinna bussijaam) to the Palivere stop on Route 9, taking around 1 hour 15 minutes. Frequent daily buses also connect Palivere with Haapsalu (25 minutes) and Risti. Check transport schedules on tpilet.ee.

By Train

There is no active passenger train service to Palivere. Rail service on the Keila–Haapsalu line ended in 2004, and the old track is now a multi-use trail. The nearest operating railway station is Turba (25 km northeast), served by Elron trains from Tallinn. From Turba, take a regional bus toward Haapsalu or cycle along the Läänemaa Health Trail to reach Palivere.

The main residential core of Palivere is easy to walk across on foot. Reaching the Palivere Tourism and Health Sports Center or the Marimetsa Bog trailhead requires a bicycle or car. The Läänemaa Health Trail provides a paved and packed-gravel corridor for cycling west to Haapsalu or east toward Risti and Turba.

What are the things to do?

  • Palivere Railway Station (Palivere jaamahoone) — Built in 1905 along the historic Keila–Haapsalu line, this preserved wooden station building remains a focal point of the settlement's history despite the closure of the railway line in 2004.

  • Palivere Elm Tree (Palivere künnapuu) — Located on the western edge of the settlement, this ancient white elm (Ulmus laevis) is one of Estonia's most famous sacred trees. Recorded in parish documents as early as 1644, 16th-century coin offerings were discovered near its gnarled trunk.

  • Pikajalamägi (Pikajala Hill) — Standing 51 meters above sea level, this glacial dune is the highest point in Lääne County. It contains remnants of an ancient hillfort and an old ski-jumping tower structure amidst pine forest trails.

  • Palivere Tourism and Health Sports Center (Palivere Turismi- ja Tervisespordikeskus) — A year-round outdoor sports facility featuring 1 km to 10 km marked health trails for running, hiking, and mountain biking. In winter, groomed cross-country ski tracks open, including an illuminated 1.5 km night loop, along with sledding hills. The site also includes an 18-hole disc golf course, mini-golf, outdoor gym, and sauna rental.

  • Cycle the Läänemaa Health Trail (Läänemaa Tervisetee) — Follow the flat, traffic-free former railway line that runs from Turba through Palivere to Rohuküla.

  • Hike Marimetsa Bog Trail — Located 10 km east near Risti, this 9 km round-trip trail leads along a wooden boardwalk through peat bogs and bog pools to a 7.6-meter observation tower.
