Matsalu National Park
Läänemaa, Estonia
Why visit Matsalu National Park?
Matsalu National Park is one of Europe's most important autumn staging grounds for migratory birds, located in Läänemaa county, western Estonia. The park encompasses Matsalu Bay, the Kasari River delta, and surrounding meadows, forests, and coastal areas, covering approximately 480 square kilometres.
The park's significance lies in its role as a stopover for hundreds of thousands of birds migrating between their breeding grounds in the north and wintering areas in the south. Over 250 bird species have been recorded here, making it a premier destination for birdwatchers. The landscape is characterised by shallow bays, reed beds, coastal meadows, and floodplain grasslands.
The best time to visit is during spring (April–May) and especially autumn (September–October) migration seasons, when bird activity is at its peak. Summer visits offer pleasant weather and wildflower displays, while winter brings quieter but still rewarding birdwatching.
