Kunda
Lääne-Virumaa, Estonia
Why visit Kunda?
Kunda is a small coastal town of approximately 3,000 people on the southern shore of the Gulf of Finland, in northern Lääne-Virumaa, about 100 km east of Tallinn. The town is situated at the mouth of the Kunda River, where it flows into the Baltic Sea. Kunda is best known for its cement industry — the Kunda Nordic Tsement factory, established in 1870, is one of the oldest and largest cement plants in the Baltic region and dominates the town's economic life and physical landscape.
Despite its industrial character, Kunda has a surprising amount of history and natural appeal. The Kunda River valley is rich in archaeological significance — the Pulli settlement, located nearby, is Estonia's oldest known human settlement, dating back over 9,000 years to the Mesolithic period. The town also has a small but attractive sandy beach, unusual for this stretch of coastline, which draws visitors in summer. The Kunda Lontova beach and surrounding limestone cliffs are a popular local getaway.
The best time to visit Kunda is from June to August, when the weather is warmest and the beach is most inviting. Average summer temperatures range from 17–22°C. The rest of the year is quiet, with cold winters (December–March) and the cement plant's smokestacks visible against the grey winter sky. Spring and autumn are changeable and often windy along the coast.

Walk the Lontova nature trail — A short coastal trail along the limestone cliffs east of the beach, offering geological and botanical interest.
Angling in the Kunda River — The river is a popular spot for trout and salmon fishing. A fishing licence is required (available online at kalastus.ee).
Visit the Kunda Cemetery Chapel — A historic 19th-century stone chapel on the edge of town, surrounded by old trees and a peaceful atmosphere.
Photograph the cement plant — The industrial landscape of the cement plant, with its towers, chimneys, and conveyor belts, is a surprisingly popular subject for photographers seeking industrial architecture.
