Lääne-Virumaa (West-Viru County) is an administrative region in northern Estonia covering 3,696 square kilometers along the southern shore of the Gulf of Finland. The county capital is Rakvere, situated 98 km east of Tallinn. The region stretches from coastal peninsulas and fishing hamlets in the north to the Pandivere Upland in the south, where northern Estonia's highest elevation points are located. The western portion of the county encompasses a major section of Lahemaa National Park, including historic Baltic-German manor estates such as Palmse, Sagadi, and Vihula.
Travelers visit the region to explore medieval fortifications like Rakvere Castle and Toolse Castle, hike through coastal pine forests and raised peat bogs, and tour 18th-century estate grounds. Transport infrastructure centers along the Tallinn–Narva highway and railway corridor, linking regional centres like Rakvere, Tapa, and Kunda for day trips or extended travel.
Lääne-Virumaa experiences a humid continental climate influenced by Baltic Sea air masses.
