Suuremoisa
Hiiumaa, Estonia
Why visit Suuremoisa?
Suuremõisa is a small village in eastern Hiiumaa, approximately 8 km east of Kärdla, the island's capital. With a population of around 200, it is one of the most visited places on the island due to its magnificent 18th-century manor house, Suuremõisa Manor (Suuremõisa mõis), the grandest baroque manor in all of Hiiumaa. The name "Suuremõisa" literally means "Large Manor" in Estonian, which is an apt description of the estate that dominates the village.
The manor was constructed between 1756 and 1763 for the Baltic German von Ungern-Sternberg family, who owned extensive lands on Hiiumaa. The symmetrical baroque main building, with its distinctive yellow facade, white trim, and central pediment, is surrounded by a large English-style park with ancient oaks, ponds, and walking paths. Today, the manor houses Hiiumaa's vocational school and is a cultural hub for the island. The surrounding village consists of a few streets of wooden houses, a church, and a small shop.
The best time to visit is from June to August, when the manor park is in full leaf, the gardens are blooming, and the weather is warm (17–22°C). May and September are quieter but still pleasant. Winters are cold and the village is very quiet. The manor itself is open for events year-round.

What are the things to do?
Suuremõisa Manor (Suuremõisa mõis) — The centrepiece of the village and Hiiumaa's premier architectural monument. The beautifully preserved baroque manor house, built for the von Ungern-Sternberg family, is notable for its symmetry, period detail, and grand proportions. The building now houses Hiiumaa's vocational school, but the exterior and park are freely accessible. The grand hall and some rooms are viewable during cultural events.
Suuremõisa Manor Park — An extensive English-style landscape park surrounding the manor, featuring ancient oak trees, a pond, walking paths, and ornamental bridges. The park is particularly beautiful in late spring when the rhododendrons bloom, and in autumn when the leaves change colour. Free access year-round.
Suuremõisa Church — A modest wooden church located near the manor, built in the 19th century for the estate workers and local community. Simple but atmospheric, with a small cemetery.
Hiiumaa vocational school gardens — The manor grounds include restored formal gardens and a small arboretum, maintained by the school's horticulture students.
Walk the manor park — A leisurely stroll through the park is the main activity in Suuremõisa. The pond, tree-lined avenues, and views of the manor make for excellent photography.
Attend a cultural event — The manor regularly hosts concerts, exhibitions, craft fairs, and cultural festivals. Check the Hiiumaa tourism website for event schedules.
Cycle from Suuremõisa — The village is a perfect starting point for cycling tours of the island. Quiet roads connect to Kärdla (15 min), Käina (20 min), and the Kõpu peninsula (1 hour).
Photography — The manor and park are among the most photographed locations on Hiiumaa. Early morning and late afternoon light are particularly beautiful.
Picnic in the park — The manor park has benches and picnic spots. A small shop in the village sells provisions.
