Emmaste
Hiiumaa, Estonia
Why visit Emmaste?
Emmaste is a small village on the southern coast of Hiiumaa, Estonia's second-largest island, situated approximately 25 km south of Kärdla, the island's capital. With a population of around 200, it is one of the more populated villages in southern Hiiumaa and serves as a local administrative centre for the surrounding rural area. The village lies on the shores of the Jausa Lagoon (Jausa laht), a shallow, sheltered bay on the island's southern coast.
Historically, Emmaste was a fishing and farming settlement, its economy built around the resources of the sea and the fertile coastal soils. The village retains a genuine, unhurried Hiiumaa character — wooden houses, grazing cattle, and the ever-present sound of the sea. The surrounding landscape is typical of southern Hiiumaa: a mosaic of coastal meadows, juniper heaths, small woodlands, and limestone shores. The Väinameri Sea, which separates Hiiumaa from the Estonian mainland and Muhu Island, is shallow and dotted with small islets.
The best time to visit is from June to August, when the weather is mild (17–22°C) and the days are long. The island's connection to the mainland via ferry is most reliable in summer. May and September are quieter and can be very pleasant. Winters are cold and windy, with ferries sometimes cancelled in stormy weather — Emmaste can feel isolated at these times.

By Car / Road
Emmaste is a 30-minute drive from Kärdla (the island's main town and port) via road 82, which traverses the island north–south. The road is narrow in places but paved.
