Saue
Harjumaa, Estonia
Why visit Saue?
Saue is a small commuter town in western Harjumaa, situated about 18 km south-west of central Tallinn. With a population of roughly 6,000, it is one of the newer urban centres in Estonia — Saue was granted town rights only in 1993, after the country regained independence. For most of its history, it was a quiet rural settlement centred around the Saue Manor estate, with a scattering of cottages and farmland. The post-independence housing boom transformed it into a popular bedroom community for families commuting to Tallinn, drawn by its leafy streets, good schools, and direct train connection.
Saue is not a tourist destination in the conventional sense — there are no major sights, no museums, and no famous festivals. Its appeal is more subtle: well-kept wooden houses, a pretty manor park, and the unhurried rhythm of small-town Estonian life. It appeals mainly to travellers who want a quiet, inexpensive base outside the capital, or those exploring Harjumaa's western countryside who appreciate a stop for a coffee or a walk in the park.
The town is set in gently rolling farm country, with the Keila River flowing a few kilometres to the north. Summer is the most pleasant season, when the manor park is green and the town's outdoor cafés open. The annual Town Day in early September brings a small fair and live music to the central square.

By Plane
Tallinn Airport (TLL) is 25 km north-east — a 25-minute taxi ride (€20–30). Alternatively, take a tram or bus from the airport to Tallinn's Baltic Station, then the train to Saue.
By Train
Saue has a railway station on the Tallinn–Keila–Paldiski line. Elron trains from Balti Jaam (Tallinn) run every 30–60 minutes; the trip takes 25 minutes. A one-way ticket costs about €2. The station is a 5-minute walk from the town centre.
By Car / Road
From Tallinn, take the E265 south-west and turn off at the Saue exit — about 18 km (20 minutes). Parking is plentiful and free in the town centre. Bus route 145 from Tallinn's Central Bus Station serves Saue several times daily (€2.50, 40 minutes).
Saue is small — easily walkable from one end to the other in 30 minutes. Bicycles are a common sight; the surrounding flat country roads are good for short cycling trips. Bolt and Uber operate for trips back to Tallinn.
What are the things to do?
Saue Manor & Park (Saue mõis) — A modest 19th-century manor house in neoclassical style, surrounded by a 6-hectare park with old oaks, a pond, and walking paths. The manor building is a school, but the park is open to the public.
Saue Church — A modern Lutheran church (1999) with clean Nordic lines and a striking copper spire. Open during services (Sunday 10am).
Pääsküla Bog Nature Trail — A 5 km wooden boardwalk loop through a raised bog at the edge of the town, with an observation platform for birdwatching (accessible from the south-east side of Saue).
Saue Manor Park walk — A gentle stroll through the leafy park, especially lovely during the autumn foliage season.
Cycling to Harjumaa's western manors — Saue is a good starting point for a cycling loop visiting the manors of Keila-Joa, Vääna, and Vasalemma.
Berry and mushroom foraging — The forests around Saue are rich in bilberries, lingonberries, and chanterelles in late summer and autumn.
