Rahaita

Janūbī al Baḩrī al Aḩmar, Eritrea

Why visit Rahaita?

Rahaita is the southernmost settlement in Eritrea, situated on the Red Sea coast immediately north of the border with Djibouti. It is a small fishing village and administrative post, serving the Afar communities that inhabit this extreme dry coastal strip. The settlement consists of a cluster of stone buildings, a mosque, and a small port used by local fishing dhows.

The area is one of the hottest inhabited places on earth, with summer temperatures routinely exceeding 45°C. The landscape is a forbidding mix of black volcanic rock, salt flats, and sparse acacia scrub. Despite the harshness, Rahaita has a strategic location near the Djibouti border and a quiet, end-of-the-line atmosphere.

By Car / Road

A gravel 4×4 track connects Rahaita to Edd (100 km north) and the P-1 highway. The road is very rough and slow. Driving from Assab takes 5–7 hours. Cross-border access from Djibouti is not officially permitted at this location.

The village is tiny and fully walkable.

What are the things to do?

  • Rahaita Border Post — A simple military checkpoint marking the southern limit of Eritrea.

  • Dhow Beach — South-facing beach where fishing boats are pulled ashore.

  • Salt Flats — Expanses of white salt crust inland from the village, shimmering in the heat.

  • Watch the daily routine of local fishermen on the beach.

  • Walk south along the coast to the border area (do not cross without permission).

  • Stargaze at night — the darkness is absolute, and the Milky Way is spectacular.
