Edd
Janūbī al Baḩrī al Aḩmar, Eritrea
Why visit Edd?
Edd is a small port town in the far south of the Southern Red Sea Region, situated close to the Djibouti border on a shallow bay of the Red Sea. Its economy revolves around artisanal fishing, with a small fleet of wooden dhows bringing in daily catches of tuna, grouper, and snapper. The town serves as a local administrative centre for the surrounding Afar communities.
The landscape around Edd is exceptionally arid, consisting of rocky plains and low volcanic hills that drop steeply to the coast. The town has a sparse, frontier feel with basic services. Temperatures are high throughout the year, with a slightly milder period from November to February.

What are the things to do?
Dhow Harbour — The heart of the town, where brightly painted fishing boats unload their catch at dawn.
Coastal Viewpoint — A low hill at the northern edge of town offering views across the bay towards Djibouti.
Edd Mosque — A simple but striking whitewashed mosque near the waterfront.
Watch the fishing fleet return at sunrise — the most atmospheric time in Edd.
Walk the empty beaches south of town for solitude and seabird spotting.
Arrange a boat trip with local fishermen (requires negotiation and basic Arabic or Afar).
