Mendefera
Al Janūbī, Eritrea
Why visit Mendefera?
Mendefera is the capital of the Debub (Southern) Region, located about 50 km south of Asmara on the main highway. The name means "no one dares" in Tigrinya, a reference to its history as a refuge. The town serves as the administrative and commercial centre of the southern highlands, with a bustling market that draws farmers and traders from the surrounding countryside. Its elevation gives it a mild climate year-round, cooler than the lowlands but warmer than Asmara.
