Daraw

Aswān, Egypt

Why visit Daraw?

Daraw is a small Nile Valley town roughly 40 km south of Aswan, just south of Kom Ombo. Its economy is built on Nile Valley agriculture (sugar cane, wheat, corn) and, most notably, on its role as a livestock-trading hub: Daraw hosts one of Egypt's largest camel markets, Souk al-Gimaal, where camels driven overland from Sudan (historically along the Forty Days Road / Darb al-Arba'in from Darfur and Kordofan) are traded before many are moved on to the larger Birqash market near Cairo. Like the rest of Upper Egypt, Daraw has a hot desert climate.

What are the things to do?

The Daraw Camel Market (Souk al-Gimaal) is the town's main attraction — camels arriving via Sudanese trading caravans are bought and sold in a scene that has continued in some form for generations.

Visiting the camel market to watch the trading is the main activity in Daraw; most visitors combine it with the nearby Temple of Kom Ombo.
