Ain Sokhna

As Suways, Egypt

Why visit Ain Sokhna?

Ain Sokhna is a Red Sea resort town on the western shore of the Gulf of Suez, in Suez Governorate, about 120 km east of Cairo and roughly 55 km south of Suez city — close enough to make it Egypt's most popular weekend beach escape for Cairenes. It stretches over some 60 km of sandy coastline backed by mountains. The name means "hot springs," referring to therapeutic sulfur springs near the town. Archaeological excavations by French and Egyptian teams in 1999 uncovered an ancient Egyptian harbour here that linked Sinai's mining areas to Memphis, used during the Old Kingdom (c. 2700–2500 BCE) to launch Red Sea expeditions for turquoise and copper.
