Why visit Benesov?

Benešov is a town in the Central Bohemia region of the Czech Republic, best known as the gateway to the magnificent Konopiště Castle, the former residence of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Este. The town sits roughly 45 km southeast of Prague and makes for an easy day trip from the capital. Konopiště was where Franz Ferdinand chose to live after marrying Czech countess Sophie Chotek, a union considered scandalous by the Viennese court. His assassination in Sarajevo in 1914 triggered the outbreak of World War I.

The surrounding area is dotted with manor houses, castles, and natural reserves. The landscape is gently rolling with forests, farmland, and river valleys typical of central Bohemia. The climate follows the continental pattern with warm summers (June to August averaging 20–25°C) and cold winters (December to February averaging -2 to 3°C). Spring and early autumn are pleasant for castle visits and hiking.

Benešov itself is a small, walkable town with a main square and a handful of notable buildings. The town's compact size means most visitors can see its highlights in a few hours before heading to Konopiště.
