Why visit Pano Lefkara?
Pano Lefkara (Greek: Πάνω Λεύκαρα) is a picturesque mountain village situated in the southern foothills of the Troodos Mountains in the Larnaca District. It is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful and culturally significant villages in Cyprus, famous throughout the world for its traditional needlecraft, known as Lefkara lace (Lefkaritika), and its delicate silver filigree work.
The village's name is derived from the Greek words leuka (white) and orhi (hills), referring to the white limestone silica that characterizes the surrounding landscape. Pano Lefkara has maintained its traditional architectural character, featuring narrow paved streets, stone-built houses with red-tiled roofs, and colorful wooden balconies. According to local legend, the Italian master Leonardo da Vinci visited the village in 1481 and purchased a large lace tablecloth for the main altar of the Milan Cathedral. In 2009, Lefkara lace was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Pano Lefkara sits at an altitude of approximately 575 metres, offering a cooler and fresher climate than the coastal areas, making it a popular retreat during the hot summer months.
