Kofinou

Larnaka, Cyprus

Why visit Kofinou?

Kofinou (Greek: Κοφίνου; Turkish: Geçitkale) is a village in the Larnaca District, situated at a major geographical and transport junction where the motorways connecting Nicosia, Limassol, and Larnaca meet.

Historically, Kofinou was a Turkish Cypriot village. In 1967, it was the site of severe intercommunal clashes that became a major turning point in the modern history of Cyprus. Following the division of the island in 1974, the Turkish Cypriot inhabitants relocated to the northern part of the island, and the village was resettled by Greek Cypriot refugees from the north. Today, it is a quiet rural community and also hosts the main government reception centre for asylum seekers in Cyprus.

The village is situated in a semi-arid valley surrounded by hills. The climate is Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and mild winters.
