Sierra del Rosario
Pinar del Río, Cuba
Why visit Sierra del Rosario?
Sierra del Rosario is a mountain range and UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in the western part of Pinar del Río province, Cuba, straddling the border between Pinar del Río and Artemisa provinces. Designated as Cuba's first Biosphere Reserve in 1985, it encompasses approximately 250 square kilometres of lush tropical forest, coffee plantations, and mountainous terrain with peaks reaching around 690 metres.
The reserve is renowned for its biodiversity, including numerous endemic plant and animal species, and its historical significance as one of Cuba's earliest coffee-growing regions. The area contains remnants of 19th-century French-Haitian coffee plantations (cafetales) that were among the most productive in the world during the colonial era. The community of Las Terrazas, established in the 1960s as a reforestation and eco-development project, lies within the reserve and serves as its main visitor hub.
The climate is cooler and wetter than the surrounding lowlands, with temperatures averaging 20–26°C and frequent mist and rain, especially at higher elevations. The dry season (November–April) offers the clearest conditions, though the forest is beautiful year-round.
