Nueva Gerona

Isla de la Juventud, Cuba

Why visit Nueva Gerona?

Nueva Gerona is the capital and largest city of the Isla de la Juventud (Isle of Youth), Cuba's second-largest island located in the Caribbean Sea south of the main island. Founded in 1830, the city sits on the banks of the Río Las Casas, which flows into the Gulf of Batabanó. It serves as the administrative, commercial, and cultural hub of this special municipality, with a population of around 40,000 residents.

The city's character is distinctly relaxed compared to mainland Cuban cities, shaped by island life and a history that includes periods as a penal colony, a haven for immigrants (particularly from the Canary Islands and the United States), and a centre for citrus and fishing industries. The Presidio Modelo, a famous panopticon prison where Fidel Castro and other revolutionaries were once held, is one of the island's most significant historical landmarks just outside the city.

Nueva Gerona has a tropical climate with warm temperatures year-round, averaging 25–30°C. The dry season (November–April) is the best time to visit, while the wet season (May–October) brings higher humidity and occasional hurricanes. The city layout is straightforward, centred around Parque Central and the main commercial streets, with the river dividing the older and newer sections.

How do you get there?

By Plane

The nearest airport is Rafael Cabrera Mustelier Airport (GER), located about 3 km from the city centre. It handles domestic flights from Havana with Cubana de Aviación, with the flight taking approximately 30 minutes. A taxi from the airport to the centre costs around CUP 150–200 (or CUC equivalent). Flights are infrequent, so booking in advance is essential.

By Car / Road

There is no road connection to the island. The primary overland option is the ferry service from Batabanó (on mainland Cuba, about 50 km south of Havana) to the port of Surgidero de Batabanó, with the crossing taking approximately 2–3 hours. From the port, Nueva Gerona is about 10 km north. Bus services from Havana to Batabanó are available, and Viazul operates some routes.

Nueva Gerona is compact and walkable in the centre. Local buses run along the main routes but are infrequent and crowded. Bicycle taxis (bicitaxis) are common and cost around CUP 20–50 for short trips within the centre. Regular taxis are available; negotiate fares before departing. Motorcycle taxis (moto-taxis) are also an affordable option at CUP 30–60. Rental cars can be arranged through local agencies, though availability is limited.
